The Bartlet was opened in 1926 thanks to the generosity of Dr John Henry Bartlet, a Surgeon based at the East Suffolk and Ipswich Hospital (now The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust).
Before he died aged 87, Dr Bartlet made a will to provide for a convalescent home,
identifying the need to fill a gap in the general care of patients.

The Bartlet was closed by NHS Suffolk (the local Primary Care Trust) in 2008.
The Bartlet Bequest Action Group is campaigning for The Bartlet to be re-opened for rehabilitation or convalescent care in the East Suffolk community.
